Types of boilers: list of the most efficient boiler types, from condensing to electric boilers. Energy efficiency and operation.

In the article dedicated totypes of heating systemswe have mentioned the condensing boilers, the traditional boiler and the electric boiler associated with photovoltaic system. In this article we will deepen the theme "boilers”And we will do it by describing the functioningor of the different models and the differences in terms of energy efficiency and savings on the bill.

Who points to save on heating, in addition to looking for the most efficient among the best types of boilers, should follow our advice listed on the page dedicated to "savings on heating ",you will see that even curtains can make a difference in your bill!

Types of boilers

The boiler is often entrusted with the task of producing domestic hot water. How does the water heater work? This equipment transforms the energy of fuels (methane, LPG, diesel, pellets, wood ...) into heat made available throughout the building through a circuit containing water or steam. In practical terms, theboilerit burns gas (or other fuel) to heat the water that is transmitted to the heat emitters of the home (radiators / radiators). It is difficult to talk about the different onestypes of boilersbecause these can be classified in different ways: based on the fuel, the nominal heat output, the type of draft and the exchange technology. As for fuels, the most common have been listed above and so we have

  • boilers amethane
  • LPG boilers
  • diesel boilers
  • pellet boilers
  • wood boilers

Talking aboutpellet boilersor wood, the article may be useful: fireplace stove or pellet stove.

A very common type of boiler in the home is thewall-mounted boilerThewall-hung boilers, as easy to guess, they areinstalled on the wall and take up little space. They are usually equipped with austenitic steel exchangers and capable of resisting flame temperatures and corrosion related to combustion itself.

Thewall-hung boilersthey can be either open chamber (with natural draft flue) or sealed chamber (forced draft), these two types can be installed on the wall respectively in an external or internal environment. The wall-hung boilerssealed chamber with forced draft see the intake and expulsion of air directly from the outside and can be installed inside the apartment. On the contrary, wall-hung open chamber boilers with natural draft flue take the air from the environment in which they were installed and can be placed outdoors or in special rooms with ventilation.

Condensing boiler

Unlike the traditional boiler which dissipates the combustion gas, thecondensing boilerexploits this fluid for the production of further heat. The flue gas is condensed and reused in the heating process. The condensing boilers are all watertight. For more information on the operationhow a condensing boiler works.

Even if thecondensing boilersmay seem more advantageous and efficient, they are not suitable for everyone: those who spend a lot of time away from home would not have the time to amortize the higher purchase price.

The yield of acondensing boileris 10 - 15% higher than that of oneboilertraditional, as well as the yield, the cost is also higher! The price of a condensing boiler is 30 - 40% higher than a traditional boiler but is amortized in a short period of time thanks to the superior efficiency of this technology. Thecondensing boilersthey perform best at low temperatures when the radiators are adjusted so they are not too hot and are used constantly.

Electric boilers

Many people wonder about the convenience ofelectric boilers. Aelectric boilerit works in a similar way to gas, the main difference is that combustion does not occur. When it comes to electric boilers, the economic convenience and in terms of energy saving can arise by combining the electric boiler with a small photovoltaic system. Electric boilers can be considered azero emissionsif powered with clean energy sources such as solar energy. Among the advantages of electric boilers there are no regulatory constraints on maintenance or installation: just a connection to the electricity network and a meter!
