THE neonicotinoids used in agriculture as insecticides are considered the main cause of population decline bees in Europe. The main but not the only one, because in truth the problem is complex and according to some scholars there are also other causes such as climatic variations, the reduction of the habitats of bees, accidents during pesticide treatment and the incompetence of hobbyist beekeepers. To think so is for example Ettore Capri, professor of Agricultural Chemistry at the Piacenza campus of the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart.
The toxicity of neonicotinoids against pollinating insects and in particular of bees has been recognized by the EU, which has banned its marketing for two years starting from 2013. A decision that has a precedent in Italy where since 2008 the use of neonicotinoids as tanning agents (chemicals used on the seed to protect it) on corn. This decision was made by the then Minister of Agriculture Luca Zaia.
It therefore seems that for once it is not Italy that has had to adapt to Europe but vice versa, in defense of agricultural crops and biodiversity in which our country is definitely ahead of others. It goes without saying that the confirmation of the ban ai neonicotinoids was not shared by supporters of the multifactorial cause of the decrease in bees, which blame this decision for the loss at EU level of 7 billion euro in terms of jobs and production costs.
The theme of the effects of neonicotinoids on bees it will be studied in depth during the Phytoiatric Forum on neonicotinoids' scheduled for Friday 8 November in Padua, where the 7th International Symposium on systemic pesticides is held from 5 to 8 November, promoted by Veneto Agriculture and the University, with scientists from all over the world. The aim of the Symposium is to find ways to reduce the toxicity of pesticides.
The importance of bees it is not only linked to the production of honey, but since we are, let's not forget how good this product is. A 100% natural product since it is entirely the bees using flowers. Organic honey, which must comply with specific regulations, is certainly the one that gives the most guarantees from the point of view of quality and healthiness.
