Ecological school. There is not just one but Italy is rich in it, and Marco Boschini he collected 10 in his book "My school with zero impact" (Edizioni Sonda). Today he continues to commit himself to the concrete and explain that change is possible. There is time and there is a way. But you can do it starting from the bottom, from your neighborhood, from your city. So, even from one ecological school.
1) How and when did you start dealing with green issues, and in particular with the ecological school?
I started immediately after joining the city council in my town in Colorno. I felt the need to broaden the field, having made the slogan my own "Think global, act local". I realized that it wasn't enough to take care of the hole under the house or the broken lamp post. It was necessary to broaden horizons, having the ambition and the presumption to change the world by changing one's neighborhood. The idea of a ecological school falls within this vision.
2) Why the schools? Why the ecological school?
Schools are a community within a community. Schools, also understood as a set of pupils, teachers, auxiliary staff, parents, and also workers and external collaborators, are, in fact, a community. As such, it produces waste, consumes energy, moves and moves, eats and drinks. All our school passes by development model, our lifestyle, that's why it is necessary to think of one ecological school. In schools, for years, alternative paths, projects and educational models have been experimented every day, which tell us about an opportunity, that is, that changing systems is possible. Create a ecological school it means demonstrating that change is possible.
3) What are you talking about in the book "my zero impact school"?
The book "my zero impact school" is a collection of good practices, 10 stories of ecological school for as many concrete projects, successfully tested around Italy. All preceded by a first part of a general nature, always on the ecological school, in which, borrowing the words of some of the most important educators of the last century, I try to establish the cultural reference framework for those projects. In short, the idea behind it.
4) How did you "work" to write it?
I took advantage of my ten years traveling around Italy as a writer and coordinator of the Virtuous Municipalities Association. The project on the ecological school but still I could observe a lot. In this I am privileged: I see an Italy that does not go on television but that exists, and pulsates full of life and action. For the books on ecological school I have done nothing but put together the many pieces of a puzzle of stories and people.
5) Is it possible and / or is there an ecological school that is zero impact?
One is possible ecological school so, from the sum of the many projects that I tell. Today, perhaps, the ecological school that comes closest to "zero impact" is that of San Giovanni Apiro (SA), directed by the principal Maria de Blase. A ecological school and in transition, a social and cultural laboratory.
6) Can you give us an example of an ecological school that involved teachers, parents and students?
Surely the Slow Food vegetable garden project experimented in a ecological school in Capannori. We are talking about 400 pupils, 17 vegetable gardens, hundreds of parents, volunteers and teachers involved in a real and lively community project.
7) As Italian schools stand today, what do you answer to those who consider it superfluous that the school is also an ecological school?
That the two are held. A ecological school, green, it is a school that consumes less energy, produces less waste, wastes fewer resources. And, therefore, an ecological school frees up resources because it saves municipalities that today no longer have money on their bills. Doing good for the environment pays for itself, and it's all savings.
