Before talking about how to save on shopping let's agree on 'what expense', since there are so many. We speak here of food shopping, the queen of all expenses, which even when it is not the biggest (maybe we spend more on a mortgage, rent, car installment or heating) is certainly the most common.
Characteristics of food shopping are frequency (we eat every day) and flexibility. While we have no room for maneuver on rent or car because that is the installment, we can intervene on what we spend on food. But be careful: this is an advantage but it is also a risk in times of economic hardship.
Faced with the need to reduce the household budget, saving on the quality or even the quantity of food may be the easiest intervention but it is certainly not the most convenient. Let's not forget that in food shopping there is our health, both today and tomorrow. Better then to file on another.
Since this story of the economic crisis began, which is not a story because the crisis really exists, the number of patients suffering from malnutrition or even malnutrition has increased in hospitals. It is a shocking fact, and not only because it negatively affects health care costs.
So we are meant: think about how to save on spesto it does not mean cutting out, but rather identifying the systems that save us money without sacrificing quality and well-being. A sort of purchasing efficiency: eliminating waste, buying intelligently, safeguarding quality.
How to save on shopping: eliminate waste
Food waste is a social plague. While food is such an important topic that it is the cornerstone of EXPO 2015, Italian families throw 639 grams of food each week in the trash; for an average value of € 6.5 per week and a total of € 8.1 billion per year. It can be avoided.
- Table etiquette. Advancing food on the plate has always been a sign of rudeness. Even the broken bread left on the table has always been interpreted as a rude gesture. Spilling the salt and dropping the oil became a symbol of bad luck because both were precious substances and 'woe betide' wasting them. Well, let's dust off the good old manners in the relationship with food and we will have taken a step forward.
- The eye and the mouth. Where I come from we say 'L'è pusè grand l'oeucc del boeucc' - the eye is bigger than the hole (mouth) - to mean that we are instinctively predisposed to overestimate our ability to swallow food, or we do not know that fresh foods don't last long in the fridge. Instead, we need measure: avoiding buying fresh products that we cannot consume on a maximum of two occasions and by calculating the number of people at the table, we will avoid filling the food bag and eat better. Post scriptum: never shopping when hungry is an excellent rule.
How to save on shopping: smart shopping.
Today there are sites that collect and compare the offers of supermarkets (kliccapromo, super savings ...) and also Apps with which you can do the same thing (such as My Flyer and Dove Convenient for Apple devices). However, we start from the assumption that we are not all geeks, that it is not easy to navigate the online offers and that when it comes to food shopping, the reference point are the two maximum three super closest to home, the shops and the markets.
Take advantage of discounts. There are days and times when the various supermarkets offer branded products at reduced prices. Here it is necessary to be informed because there is really the possibility to save without sacrificing the quality (real or presumed) of the favorite brand. When it comes to pasta, rice or other durable foods, there is no risk that the decline will depend on the imminent deadline. If it's fresh, just buy it in moderate quantities.
Price does not (always) make quality. Given that no one gives anything away and that quality products generally cost a little more (as it should be), the price may also depend on other factors, such as advertising and marketing campaigns. It is important to know how to read the labels. In pasta, for example, a good indicator of quality is the protein content which is not always lower in the less expensive brands. Knowing how to read labels is important.
Brands and substance. In the world of various detergents and detergents (for washing machines, dishes, floors, bathrooms, furniture ...) many products boast exceptional results because they combine some synthetic chemical found with active ingredients also contained in vinegar, lemon juice and bicarbonate of sodium. By focusing on natural products and basic substances such as ammonia and bleach, you help the environment and save a lot.
A little good will. If we did not engage in separate collection we would be submerged by waste. Nobody likes to keep the wet bag under the sink or divide the plastic from the glass, but we do. In the same way, if we learned to bring the bag from home instead of buying shopper bags at every expense, or if we focused on the bulk-refillable products that more and more shops offer (detergents but also food such as pasta and rice) we could save money and have less. waste in the house. All you need is a little good will.
Your trusted shopkeeper. The best bargains may not always be at the supermarket. Having a good relationship of trust with the shopkeeper can be a guarantee of quality, goodness and often a better price. This is especially true for fresh, meat, fish and vegetables, and improves the quality of life because it makes shopping more enjoyable.
Markets and flea markets. For the shopping in these places, real techniques have been developed. The most common recommends going to the market just before closing time, or on Saturday afternoon if it is a permanent market, so as to take advantage of the fresh sales. True, it can work, but keep in mind that whoever arrives first stays better and whoever arrives early in the morning takes the best goods. Shopping during closing hours can save you money, but perhaps at the expense of quality. Think about it.
Solidarity Purchase Groups (GAS). The collective purchase of food products through GAS is a way to save money but also to have quality. Generally with the GAS you buy organic and seasonal products taking care to recognize the right compensation to the producer. Buying large batches together which are then divided among the members of the group allows you to have high quality and particular products at an affordable price. The fact that GASs are rising means they are working.
