The external thermal coat is a great way to improve energy quality of a building. Indeed it is the best of systems (almost always at least) if you look at the performance and economic convenience. Only in second place is the use of high efficiency technologies, for example condensing boilers, and in third place the use of renewable energy sources such as the sun, wind and heat from the Earth (geothermal).

The kilowatt hour that saves us a good external thermal coat it is worth more than that produced by the most efficient of boilers. This is simply because the life span of thermal insulation materials is much longer than that of technological systems. And not only that: a good one insulating thermal coat allows the installation of less powerful boilers, and therefore less expensive.

The function of a external thermal coat applied to the opaque surfaces of a building is to slow down the diffusion of heat through the envelope (walls, roofs) and consequently reduce the amount of energy required for winter heating and summer cooling. The advantage of the external thermal coat compared to the insulation in the cavity of the walls is to cover the entire surface, minimizing the incidence of thermal bridges.

Insulation is obtained through the use of materials that have a low thermal conductivity (λ). The lower the λ value of a material, the better its thermal insulation properties are. However, the phase shift also counts, which is the measure of the time taken by heat to pass from one face to the other of a material. And the vapor permeability of the insulating material counts. A great external thermal coat it combines a low λ value, a high phase shift time and is breathable.

The application of a external thermal coat on the walls of a building it is usually entrusted to specialized workers (but you can also opt for the DIY thermal coat). In fact, the installation must be perfect for the 'insulation system' to work and last for a long time. A very high quality coat is one made with natural blonde cork board, but it is also the most expensive. Expanded polystyrene panels (which however do not protect against heat and are not breathable) are almost always the cheapest solution.
