Thebamboo bicycleshave a lightness and resistance comparable to that of classic aluminum alloy bicycles. A bamboo bicycle it is distinguished from common creations for the particular raw material with which the frame is made: if in a conventional bike the tubes are welded together and made of metal alloys (steel, aluminum or synthetic materials such as carbon fiber), in these details bicycles the frame consists of segments of bamboo cane.

The production and marketing of bamboo bicycles occupies a niche segment in bicycle manufacturing, a sector that also finds a small space among Italian manufacturers.

In the past we have already told you about thebamboocycle, therebamboo bikeat a cost of 600 euros which sees a frame made up of bamboo canes held together by joints of steel reinforced with carbon fibers.

The prices of bamboo bikes are not always so soft, also because they are often made to measure handcrafted bikes. To save on the price, some ateliers organize short-term paid workshops and workshops during which participants, under the guidance of experts, can create a bamboo bikecomplete and tailor-made.

Bamboo is a natural material and destined to "biodegrade", for this reason, before being used as the main material of a bicycle frame, it must be treated. There are several methods to treat bamboo canes and make them resistant and durable over time. Among the most used methods is the heat treatment of wood, performed by traditional smoking or more modern gas torches or ovens.

The assembly of the frame in bamboo uses different joining systems. One of the earliest designs used metal joints that were tightened around the bamboo "tube". Model bamboocycle similarly, it uses joints in steel reinforced with carbon fiber, but there is no lack of joints in natural fibers such as tow and hemp or other materials such as glass fiber impregnated with epoxy or polyurethane resins. To prevent damage due to contact with water and to protect from attack by xylophagous insects, the bamboo frame, once assembled, can be finished with a treatment that covers it with a surface film of polyurethane.

As stated, also in Italy the production ofbamboo bikehas taken root: to produce them, by hand and with artisanal method, is a young Sicilian start-up, theBambooryist. Bambooryist was born in a region like Sicily, where the tradition of woodworking and natural materials has very distant roots, just think of the Sicilian cart already widespread in the nineteenth century.

The Bambooryist bicycle has a frame made with 8 bamboo canes joined together with a very simple structure. The only drawback would seem to be the price: the made in Italy bamboo bike can be taken home at prices ranging from 690 euros (for the frame only) up to 1200 euros for the complete bicyclesinglespeed.
